Black Panther Photography in India

Destination

NAGARHOLE NATIONAL PARK

Located in India’s southern state of Karnataka and part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Nagarhole is also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park. Popularly called Kabini, because of the Kabini reservoir which separates Nagarhole from the adjoining forest of Bandipur national park, this is the land of the elusive black panther. Melanism in the world of leopards is common in India, especially in the southern belt. But black panthers are very shy and highly nocturnal. Kabini was always known for its leopard population and then for the tigers. However, in the past few years, the black panther of Kabini has made the park extremely popular. This one individual is the most photographed black panther in the wild. With the recent National Geographic film revolving around this cat, Kabini has surely caught the attention of wildlife photographers all over the world.
